Eugenia uruguayensis is a species which is still unknown in the world of cultivation, it is only just beginning to be “tested” by collectors and fruit lovers. The fruit is eaten raw and is very popular among children.

Brazil through to north-eastern Argentina

Etymology

The genus Eugenia is named in honour of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Uruguayensis means “from Uruguay”.

Description and flowering period

This small tree reaches 3 to 5 meters in height. Leaves are tough, smooth on both side and feel like cardboard to the touch. Fruits are small spherical or oval berries, measuring 1,5cm in diameter. Once mature, they turn dark red or even black, their flesh is yellow. They are very attractive to many bird species who feed on them.

Habitat

It has to be planted in a nutrient rich, fresh, yet well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It requires a tropical or subtropical climate and is hardy to –5°C.

Uses

  • Ornamental.
  • Food & drink: The fruits are eaten raw and very successful with kids.

Notes

The species is still really rare in cultivation. It has only recently been tested in cultivation by private collectors and fruit lovers.
